In What Order Should You Clean a Home’s Exterior?
When several exterior surfaces need cleaning, the order matters. A practical plan usually works from higher surfaces toward lower surfaces so roof runoff, loosened debris, and rinse water do not land on areas that were already finished.
For many Florida homes, a sensible sequence is roof first when it needs cleaning, then gutters and upper details, house washing, pool cage or lanai areas, and finally driveways, sidewalks, patios, and other ground-level hardscapes. The exact order can change with the property, drainage, specialty stains, weather, and whether pavers will be sealed.
A Practical Exterior Cleaning Sequence
1. Clean the Roof Before the House When Both Need Service
If the roof actually needs cleaning, it is generally the logical place to begin. Roof treatment and rinsing can affect gutters, soffits, fascia, walls, windows, landscaping, and concrete below. Cleaning the house first and then working above it can create unnecessary re-rinsing.
This does not mean every project needs roof cleaning. If the roof is already clean, it should not be added simply to follow a sequence. Homeowners can check the signs a roof needs cleaning before including it.
Roofing materials also require a different approach than ground-level concrete. Professional roof cleaning generally relies on controlled soft-wash chemistry rather than using driveway-style pressure on shingles or tile.
2. Address Gutters and Upper Exterior Details Next
Gutters sit directly below the roof, so clogged gutters, exterior gutter staining, soffits, and fascia are best considered before moving farther down the structure. Interior debris removal and exterior gutter brightening are different services and may require different processes.
If gutters need to be cleared, handling that before lower surfaces are finished helps keep leaves and debris from falling onto freshly cleaned walls, patios, or walkways.
3. House Washing Comes Before Most Ground-Level Concrete
Once the roof and upper areas are addressed, the walls can be cleaned. Stucco, siding, painted surfaces, soffits, and fascia generally need a lower-pressure, surface-appropriate method. This is where soft washing a house differs significantly from cleaning a driveway.

Gravity is the simple reason. Water, treatment, and loosened debris tend to move downward. Planning the project around that movement can reduce duplicate work while still allowing each surface to receive the cleaning method it actually needs.
4. Coordinate Pool Cages, Lanais, and Patios
Pool areas have their own cleaning sequence because screens, enclosure framing, walls, decks, and pavers can all be close together. In many cases, it makes sense to clean the enclosure and upper portions before completing the deck below.

5. Finish With Driveways, Sidewalks, and Other Flatwork
Driveways and sidewalks are often among the last major surfaces cleaned. By this point, runoff from the roof and walls has already reached the ground, so the concrete can receive its final cleaning without later work above it undoing the appearance.
On compatible concrete, a professional process may include pretreatment, uniform surface cleaning, rinsing, and post-treatment when appropriate. Should the Driveway Be Cleaned Before or After House Washing?
When both are part of the same project, the driveway is usually better handled after the house wash. House-washing runoff can reach the driveway, front walk, or adjacent concrete. Finishing the flatwork afterward allows those surfaces to receive their final rinse and cleaning at the end of the sequence.
There are exceptions. Access limitations or drainage conditions can require a crew to change the order. The point is not to follow a rigid checklist; it is to prevent completed work from being unnecessarily affected by the next service.
